Walnuts “In shell”
Description
1. How it is grown and harvested: Central Asia is part of the natural homeland of the walnut, and wild walnut forests still grow in the mountains of the region. Hot summers, cool nights and clean mountain water help the nuts develop full, well-filled kernels with a rich flavour and a high content of healthy oils. Walnuts have grown in the mountains and valleys of Uzbekistan for thousands of years, and the region is part of the walnut’s natural home. Our walnuts come from orchards and mountain groves where the trees enjoy hot summers and cool nights. In autumn, when the green husks split open, the nuts are harvested by hand or by shaking the trees, then hulled and dried naturally to the correct moisture level for safe storage. Mature walnut trees can grow for many decades, and many of the region’s groves include old trees that produce well-flavoured nuts with thin to medium shells.
2. Processing and packaging details: The walnuts are cleaned and washed to remove husk residue and dust, then dried and sorted by size. Empty, damaged, cracked or discoloured nuts are removed. The nuts are packed in breathable bags or cartons suitable for long-term storage and export, which keep them dry and protected while their natural shell preserves the freshness of the kernel. Walnuts are rich in delicate oils, so they should be stored cool (ideally 0–10 °C) and dry, away from light and strong odours. In-shell walnuts keep their quality for up to 12 months; kernels are best stored refrigerated and used within 6–12 months. Each lot can be supplied with export documentation, including a phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin, on request.
3. Health benefits and nutrition: Walnuts are an outstanding plant source of omega-3 fatty acid (alpha-linolenic acid, ALA), which contributes to normal heart health. They also provide healthy unsaturated fats, plant protein, dietary fibre, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin E, together with polyphenol antioxidants. Walnuts are an allergen for people with tree-nut allergies. Eating a small handful of walnuts a day is an easy way to add omega-3 fats, protein and minerals to a balanced diet, and walnuts in shell keep their freshness especially well. Walnuts in shell are popular for retail, markets and the festive season, and for customers who prefer to crack their own nuts for maximum freshness. They are also supplied to cracking and processing companies.
